Catching Up With Justin Meyer

Posted February 17th, 2009 by Lance Michael Hakker

The director of newly formed Videograss and creator of everyone’s favorite web videos, Sunday in the Park, Justin Meyer isn’t a pea coat clad artist being artsy for the sake of being artsy, he’s just making snowboarding watchable again. I picked his brain here to find out what the hell is going on with Videograss.

How did you start shooting snowboarding?

Justin: Just filming each other, you know friends style. I think I was the one who didn’t shake the camera everywhere.

Was this at the local Las Vegas spots?

Justin: Yea a little bit, I filmed skateboarding before snowboarding, actually photos before video.

How did the Bear Mountain video gig come about?

Justin: I moved out there and moved in with Joe Carlino one winter before they had a video program going, and Joe was the unofficial video guy doing invoice style web videos and I helped out whenever I could borrow a camera.

Those were the good ol’ days. When Joe left you started Sunday in the Park, that was a hit. Nick Hamilton told me that even going into this summer and fall it was still the 3rd most searched thing on Transworld. What’s the deal with that?

Justin: Well before then, when Joe did most all the web videos for the Bear site they were the only snowboarding web videos that were new and fresh every week. I think that vibe carried on into Sunday in the Park. Most kids that snowboard only ride parks, so they can relate you know?

Did you shoot those exclusively on Sundays?

Justin: No, it was Sunday in the Park because that’s when the video would be posted. Mostly shot like say a Monday or a Friday or something.

And now you’ve moved on to Salt Lake City, what brings you there?

Justin: Well some family issues and not being able to live in Big Bear, then Nima had been talking about making a video for like 4 years, and now was finally a good time and Videograss was born. Can’t live in Vegas and make a snowboard video, so Salt Lake City is now home.

Yes, Videograss was born. I’ve made a few trips with you to Salt Lake in the past, but never for more than a week or less. How do you like making a permanent residence out of it?

Justin: It’s not bad. It has its pros and cons.

I lived there for a bit and loved it. How has Videograss been going?

Justin: Of course, you would love it here. Videograss has been doing insanely well. Way better than I could have imagined.

The crew is made up of pretty much all the loosest young characters out there these days, how’d they come about?

Justin: Well a handful of the young guys were fresh off the first Transworld movie with nothing to film for. The rest are just our favorite snowboarders from all over. It’s a unique crew unlike most other video crews. Like with all these guys, they would hang out with each other separate from snowboarding. Everyone is real good friends and on the same page. No random guys mixed in to fill a certain niche or fill a void in sponsor money.

Who’s parts can we expect to skip?

Justin:
None of em, that’s what is gonna make this video different. No skips is the goal, and with everyone involved that won’t be an issue. But maybe skip Desiree’s part if she can manage to hustle one off. Hahaha! Just kidding, she has been getting manly out there.

And you’re going to Japan tomorrow right?

Justin: Yea, bright and early. Never been over there, sounds and looks like a good time.

Hell yeah, Nima is there now. Who are you going with?

Justin: Going with the Airblaster crew, Dirks, Jonas, Jed, Jesse Grandkoski, and Airblaster filmer Jake Sutton. Probably meeting up with more people, I think everyone is there.

Yeah, everyone is going to Japan right now. Lucky bastards, all of you. But back to Videograss, besides you, who else handles the videotaping?

Justin: That would be Jan Snarski from down under, Sean McCormick, and a lot of helping hands, Shelby, Greg, Brock, Will, Adam, you if you are down to handle this VX I got collecting dust.

I have some experience with the VX, I think I’m up for it. So there was the teaser that was playing at some booths around SIA, including ours, when can the public get a little taste of Videograss?

Justin: We are going to be starting our weekly web campaign very shortly, but I think when it is teaser time is when they will get a real taste.

So the SIA teaser will remain a secret?

Justin: What SIA teaser? Maybe we will drop a quick 2 day link on the Videograss site here soon. Gotta catch that link before it is no dice.

How do you expect Videograss to be different from other snowboard movies lately?

Justin: I think the focus will be the snowboarding, not the filming… No forced feelings. Just setting out to make a video that we want to watch with no skips.

Does that mean not a lot of slo-mo, dollys, and helicopters?

Justin: Hahaha, we already got helicopters fool, just ask Sean. Hahaha. But yea, not trying to make a video to impress other filmers, just put out some legit snowboarding to some good music, the video we all want to watch, no pop-techno shit set to some mediocre snowboarding.

Oh yeah, I heard about that. Did Sean throw up? I hear he has a problem sitting passenger in a car.

Justin:
Sean is just a major pussy, I’m sure he buckled that belt as tight as it would go, scared to hang out the door… That would make sense why he didn’t get one shot from that bird. Haha!

Blowing it.. Okay. So what is your favorite snowboard video of all time?

Justin: Love/Hate hands down.

Favorite Part of all time?

Justin: Wittlake in Revival. It was good, but above that I think I watched it the most as a kid, burnt out a VCR on that part. JP in Technical Difficulties burned up some of that old VCR as well.

Is it fair to ask who’s parts are looking to be good this year in Videograss?

Justin: Fair enough, but honestly I think everyone is going to have a really good part.

Yeah, I think you’re right. Anyone outside of Videograss who you’re excited to see a video part from this year?

Justin: Oh so many… Kooley, Jordan, Grendy’s, Fucking Jed!, Bryan Fox, Johnny Miller, Gus Engle, JP, Sexton, Burtner, man so many I can’t list them all it would take too long.

Good call. Well the Laker game is about to start, so I gotta jam. Have fun in Japan.

Justin: Yea, I gotta pack anyways.
